Camping: Decorum or Modern Camping. All camping planning and setup is planned by participant. Campsite reservation directions will be emailed close to the event date.

Food: Planned or purchased by participants.

Transportation: Arranged by participant.

Before you go any further let us help you understand exactly what you’re getting yourself into… Hynafol is a BIG experience and we want to make sure you’re as informed as possible!

Hynafol is a medieval fantasy live action role playing event meets a festival type atmosphere where you choose your own adventure for the five days of the Grand Gathering!

During the event you’re going to have a wide range of experiences available to you. There is more to do than can be experienced by one person. The event is designed that way on purpose. Not all things are possible to experience in one go and that’s the beauty of it!

Many people attend this event for many different reasons. Some just want to dress up in medieval clothes and feel the vibes with their friends for 5 days. Some want to battle every chance they get and will attend all the battles, skirmishes and duel in the streets. Others want to be in character and roleplay in the most passionate way possible. Most people fall in between all three of those. Whatever your reason is there is room for you at Hynafol!

We want to support you in how you want to experience this event. That being said, it is important for you to know that the choices you make and relationships you form during the event will affect the outcome of the possibilities available to you and outcomes you receive.

Which is good news! This is a Choose Your Own Adventure event!

During this event you will make a character that will become YOU for the event. We recommend making a simple character that gives you a new name and from there is essentially you in a medieval setting. However, the options are endless and it is completely up to you.

Your character will likely end up joining a guild. Guild’s are the building block of Hynafol society. The vast majority of roleplaying, politics, and events are done with and through your guild. You can go it alone… but we don’t recommend it.

Most guilds are in a Kingdom which is an even larger grouping of people that opens the doors to wider camaraderie, activities and belonging. But it doesn’t stop there. There are vocations to participate in, quests to partake, religions to adhere to and many other possibilities.

We believe there is a magic that is available to you at this event and we hope that you will find it and make your mark on the world of Hynafol!

That being said there are a number of things that you should know about what your experience will be like:

You should understand that:

• This is a primitive camping experience in a mock medieval setting.
• You will be primarily outside for 5 days straight.
• You will be exposed to all of the elements of Texas in the fall.
• We have had very warm days upwards of 85 degrees Fahrenheit.
• We have also had very cold days! During our test event in November of 2021 the temperature dropped below freezing.
• It will likely rain and other adverse weather is likely to occur.
• If you choose to stay in one of our medieval tents you need to understand:
  • They are not modern tents.
  • The canvas is water resistant but not waterproof and the walls can have water permeate through.
  • There is not a floor. The ground will be wet if it rains (and your stuff along with it if you do not elevate it).
• You will likely be wet, cold and have to walk through mud and puddles.
• You will be exposed to the Texas wildlife. Generally in the form of:
  • Spiders
  • Ants (yes, there are fire ants)
  • Snakes
  • Scorpions
• This is a community oriented event. When difficult situations arise, as is the case with inclement weather, the all hands on-deck attitude to help your fellow Hynafol Denizens is what makes the event special.
  • Our staff and volunteers will do everything we can to help you if difficult situations arise, but we cannot possibly fix every issue that arises during an event of this magnitude.
  • Half of the fun is banding together to overcome everyday obstacles!
• Many that attend this event find it to be taxing and difficult:
  • Those of moderate physical fitness find this event to be exhausting and strenuous.
  • You will walk an average of 10 miles per day (this is not an exaggeration – we measured it)
  • The Battles are athletic competitions
• Hynafol has a comprehensive code of conduct but we cannot guarantee all of your interactions with others during the event.
• Your roleplay experiences and opportunities are not guaranteed. This is a freeform, open ended roleplaying event. You may deeply desire to do something and it may not be available to you.
• This event has a festival type atmosphere. We like to describe it as family friendly, but not catered to families. You will see people of all ages from infants to wisened sages enjoying themselves, but this is still a festival and you should expect to experience the full range of what normally takes place at a festival:
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Smoking
  • Loud music
  • Loud people
  • Adult language

We hope that this list won’t scare you away from enjoying the event. Instead we hope that it will set your expectations and you will walk into the event informed and ready to play.
