Mist Games…! (Yes, it’s a joke.)

All of this is an April Fool’s prank, Mist Games is not a real event,  but we’re seriously glad you’re interested in Hynafol.

If the idea of smoky battlefields, melodramatic proclamations, and terrible puns about “mist” made you smile, our prank did its job.

We love that the world of Hynafol makes people imagine big, amazing spectacles and we promise the real Hynafol is full of the same energy, just with fewer dystopian parodies and more medieval friendship-drama.

So what was “Mist Games”? Think of it as a wink: a parody riff on dystopian tournament stories (you know the stories…). It’s an April Fool’s headline meant to poke fun at grand, over-the-top competition narratives, and to point people toward the real thing: a collaborative, imaginative, player-run fantasy world where the stakes are character, narrative, and good company, not actual survival. Again, not real, just ridiculous and intentional.

What is Hynafol? Hynafol is an immersive fantasy LARP and storytelling community where players create characters, join Houses, Guilds, Kingdoms, and Courts, and build shared stories together. Events range from narrative “Expeditions” with battles and tournaments to magical-school-focused weekends like Arcanum Academy, which teach lore, systems, and play mechanics in short, lively classes. And of course The Grand Gathering which is our 7 Day, fully immersive experience with hundreds of participants, huge battles, epic narratives and more quests and activities than anyone can possibly do. 

Our events blend structured gameplay (classes, tests, tournaments) with freeform roleplay and volunteer-run surprises that make the world feel alive. For a deeper look at how Arcanum Academy will teach players the systems and lore of Hynafol, see the event overview. 

How Hynafol actually works: Players come with characters (or just a character name – we’ll teach you the rest) and pick the political, cultural, and social groups that fit them. Houses for family and political ties, Guilds for crafts and vocations, Kingdoms and Courts for larger loyalties. Events are staff and lots of volunteer helpers who run classes, tournaments, and narrative scenes; volunteering is a huge part of making Hynafol possible and is an easy way to meet people and learn the ropes.

Our Expeditions mix tournaments, combat rules, and storytelling, and our community emphasizes safety, clear rules, and making magic for each other.

Arcanum Academy is a great entry point if you’re new, or a deepening experience if you’re a veteran who wants to master Hynafol’s systems.
